D&D 4E: A Deeper Look Part 1: Art
I’ve decided to take some deeper looks into this “4th Edition” thing. The next post or two will involve me looking through the book again, and giving some of my views, opinions, and reactions to its contents. I will also try and make a test character, and showcase how the system works. I’ll start with my reactions to the book’s inside art. The following are just cut-pasted from a running text document I’m keeping for recording the initial reactions, and I’m not going to bother editing them.
p4: WTF is that thing? it’s hideous, and does not make me want to roleplay, unless by “roleplay” you mean “kill that travesty as quickly as possible”
p5: “The Freakshow Starts Here!”
p6: The freakshow continues
p13: finally a “normal”-looking dude!
p16: nope, the freak show is back
p32: still going…
p34: *facepalm*
p36: she’s not a real dwarf, she has no beard
p38: seriously, why did the art get so bad?
p40: you’d think they were trying to look like Blizzard or something…
p42: the half-elves are so far the best images I’ve seen in this book.
p44: remember the days when halflings were simple folk, and not psychotic ping-pong warriors? yeah, I miss those days too.
p46: humans apparently look like WoW characters.
p48: *facepalm*
p50: DnD 4e, now with more WoW, and more Warhammer 40k!
p51: OMG IT’S SCREAM! WHERE IS POSE?!?! plus: WTF is up with this growing trend in having fantasy characters wearing a single damned shoulder pad and no other discernible armor?
pXXX: ugh I can’t do this anymore. Please no more.

I’m liking the art and layout of the book — it’s much more easier to read than the prior versions and the art is at least somewhat consistent throughout the book. The dragonettes look like monsters to fight, but I have a feeling they’re there for the people that play Horde characters. I can’t tell what the difference is supposed to be between the elfs and the eladrian or whatever they’re supposed to be called. It’s like they took “wood elf” and made them into “elf” and then took the leftovers and dumped them into that other fey race. This feels like having one section for “Humans” and having one for “Mexicans”.
I was expecting the freak show, and I’m not surprised that I got just that. Very few of the characters looks like people, and more like Action Figures. Meh.
